March Member Feature: Meet Gina!

I'm so excited to introduce our March featured member, Gina! She is a powerhouse of an athlete, a dedicated runner, and is always inspiring her fellow workout buddies. It's actually thanks to Gina that we have so many races on the books! She fell in love with running in the last two years and brought us all along for the ride :)  I had the joy of running alongside her for the Holiday Half last December and wouldn't have done as well without her positive attitude (and brilliant interval strategy) to keep us going:)

Like we do, I asked Gina some questions so you can get to know her beyond her amazing burpee prowess.

Hey Gina, tell us a little bit about yourself!

I am 29 years old and I work at the University of Portland in Student Affairs. I am a Portland native. I love coffee, reading, running, and my Labradoodle Murphy!

(Editor's Sidenote: murphy is the cutest dog and straight up looks like a stuffed animal.)

What did you do for exercise/fitness before Portland Outdoor Fitness?

Before Portland Outdoor Fitness I struggled to find a workout routine. I always heard people saying to just find a workout routine that you enjoyed, but I honestly thought that this would never be the case for me. I’d have good intentions of working out consistently but nothing ever stuck. For me, that usually meant going to the gym and zoning out on an elliptical for about 30 minutes. My goal was to do this 4-5 times a week, I’d start out strong and then my attendance would fizzle out.

What gets you out of bed bright and early to get to the courts?

The feeling after accomplishing a hard workout is what gets me to the courts. Feeling so accomplished and strong before my work day even gets started is the best feeling. Liz’s encouragement and positive attitude keeps me going when workouts get hard. I have found that I love working out outside. Even in the winter months where the weather can be pretty cold, you warm up so quickly.

What is one way this program has improved your regular/daily life?

This program has improved my life in many ways. In the past year and a half I have lost thirty pounds and gained the confidence to start running. I went from not running at all to running two 10k races and two half marathons. I finally feel strong and confident in my own skin. The confidence that I have gained from POF has helped me outside of working out. I find myself investing in relationships more fully, I’ve seen an improvement in my work life, and have found the confidence to try new experiences.

What's your favorite workout style and why?

I love circuits because you can go at your own pace. Circuits help me to find the motivation to push myself because once you’ve completed a circuit workout, you’re done!

What's your favorite movement?

Cleans. Always! Squats are a close second.

What advice would you offer someone just starting out with Portland Outdoor Fitness?

A few friends that I worked with encouraged me to try POF and I was hesitant at first, I actually put it off for about a month until I got the courage to give it try. But, I am so glad that I did! It might seem really intimidating to try any new workout class but Liz and the POF workout community are so encouraging and welcoming. Don’t worry about “keeping up” with others, just focus on doing the best you can. Liz can always modify moves so that you can participate in the workout in a way that is best for you.

What's something we may not know about you?

I was a baby model.

Important question... dark chocolate, milk chocolate or no chocolate?!
